Local Organization Feeds 4,000 Children for Three Years

SOUTH BEND, Ind. - Steve Sumrall, president of Feeding The Nations (FTN), and Randy Souza, director, just returned from a week-long outreach trip to Lusaka, Zambia where they helped distribute 60 tons of food to 15 orphanages and schools. FTN has been supporting the facilities for the last two years, providing over 4,000 orphans and other vulnerable children with two meals a day. With three phases of the mission now completed, the organization has given a total of 200 tons of food and supplies worth $4 million. Sumrall announced the outreach would be extended another year to cover all of 2009.

"As with all outreach programs, our trip was truly an eye-opening experience," said Sumrall. "We feel blessed to have had the opportunity to meet the children we have been supporting. They have endured hardships at their young ages that no one should ever have to face. Serving them meals is something I will never forget, but as we return home, the mission must go on, so we have decided to continue our support for another year."

For the past few years, FTN has been supporting the orphanages and schools located around Zambia's capital, Lusaka. The children spend their days learning in cramped classrooms with no electricity, windows, lighting or running water. Often up to 60 children sit shoulder-to-shoulder on the dirty concrete classroom floors, yet without the schools and orphanages, most children would not receive consistent nourishment and education. FTN's on-site administrators, Dave and Connie Keating, oversee the food distribution to ensure the program proceeds with integrity and focus. They find ways to keep the food from being stolen by desperate and hungry individuals, ensuring that the 4,000 children receive the food and supplies designated as theirs.
