Famine Has Hit East Africa
Reports coming out of East Africa show that the situation is very critical. Many of you have heard the news reports and seen the stories that famine has struck the Horn of Africa. Some are saying that this is the worst drought in the last 60 years. Unprecedented numbers of people are fleeing areas because of no food and very limited water. The United Nations has classified large areas of Somalia, Ethiopia, Djibouti and Kenya as an extreme emergency. They are projecting 10 to 20 million people are affected across the region. The price of grain has risen 30-80% above the average. Just south of this famine area is another region where the rain has not fallen in a very long time, it is the country of Tanzania. Everything is dry, no crops, very little food and it will get worse until the next crop in May-June 2012. See what God is doing to help the believers that are praying Father…Give us today our daily bread.
Feeding The Nations received an e-mail from Gotte Stenroos who has been a missionary in Tanzania for many years; he stated the situation is very bad in the northern part of the country. Missionary Stenroos has worked with our Feeding The Nations Finland team for years in Tanzania. He has provided warehousing; trucking to the villages, ministry and insured the people in need received the food. He stated the people are getting desperate. One man came to us crying. His wife had died while delivering twins. This happened one week before the team arrived in his village. He had 5 children and he said he had no food left, no cows, and no goats to sell anymore. They walk several miles each day just to get water. Story after story we can share about how the drought has taken its toll on the food sources.
Feeding The Nations went to work right away to reach out and provide finances to buy large bags of corn as this is one of the main staples of Tanzania. A contract was set to buy almost 600,000 pounds of corn. This corn was paid for and the trucks arrived at the warehouse for off-loading into the secured storage area. The first distribution has taken place with phase one complete of three phases. The first 200,000 pounds of corn was delivered with 1,800 families receiving help. Some of the villages that received food were Mongowamono, Endajachi, Endadudu, Umbur, Gembaki and Endanavish. The man whose wife died while giving birth received a large bag of corn. He said ‘This food will save them from dying of hunger. Now they have food for a couple of months.
We will post and share more stories as the bags of corn are distributed to many more villages. Please pray for these nations and this part of the world. If you would like to help please go to the donation page on this web-site and make a donation. Every dollar helps!!
