Feeding The Nations® Continues to Touch the Sudanese
SOUTH BEND, Ind. - The South Bend-based non-profit Feeding The Nations' (FTN) continuing support of Sudan has made a difference to the malnourished refugees. FTN sent 442,000 pre-packaged rice casserole meals fortified with vitamins and minerals along with nearly 4 million tablets of children multi-vitamins in June 2007. The supplies were a follow up to the 271,000 meals that arrived in November of 2006 and 242,000 meals in March of 2007.
"Sudan refugees live in desolate conditions with little food, drinking water or medicine. Many children have lost their parents," said Steve Sumrall, president of FTN. "We received reports that the first shipment arrived just in time to feed many children who were on the brink of starvation. In fact, one child lost his parents during the 40-mile journey by foot, but this child was saved from death thanks to the nutritional food provided to him."
Pastor Getahun Tesema from Ethiopia distributed the provisions. He reported that a recent preliminary nutrition survey tracked the health and nutrition of the refugees. "The survey showed that there were improvements in health services and indicated that one of the factors for the improvement was the provisions of fortified rice for moderate and severely malnourished children." To FTN, he said "We are grateful for all the good things you have done."
The Sudanese refugees have been displaced due to a political unrest. Tens of thousands have died because of disease and hunger. Families have little access to food, water, clothing or shelter.
