SUDAN
JULY 2009 UPDATE: Feeding The Nations in cooperation with World Children's Fund and Global Assistance shipped 43,000 pounds of MannaPack-Rice meals to the New Life Ministry in Juba, Southern Sudan.
Sudan has been at war for 40 of the last 50 years. Over 2 million people have been internally displaced during the past two years due to civil conflict. Since a peace accord was signed in Spring of 2006, hundreds of thousands of people have been returning to Southern Sudan, but the infrastructure has been decimated by the war. Food aid is necessary until people can re-establish themselves and begin yielding harvests once again. In the meantime, apart from the humanitarian aid, people rely on whatever they can gather from the fields; including poisonous roots in the dry season when nothing else is available.
New Life Ministry distributes food mainly to war widows and children through the local church and aids in trauma counseling.
FEBRUARY 2009 UPDATE: Feeding The Nations has partnered with Global Assistance to send 2 x 40 foot containers of food totaling 555,864 vita-meals to the New Life Ministry located in Juba, Southern Sudan.
2008 UPDATE: On September 29, 2008, Feeding The Nations shipped 285,000 vita meals valued at $42,500 to the International Aid Services in Mundri, Sudan to feed thousands of children in need.
2007 UPDATE: In mid-April, an additional 242,352 meals of fortified rice, vegetable and soy protein meals and 4,955 pounds of children's multi-vitamins valued at $50,733 were shipped to Sudan and arrived in June.
January 2007 UPDATE: 242,352 highly nutritious fortified rice, vegetable and soy protein meals were delivered to Sudan accompanied by 7,235 pounds of multi-vitamins worth over $503,000. This distribution was able to feed many of the Sudanese refugees which are primarily children.
The following is a letter from a local pastor reiterating the importance of this recent food distribution.
We have received and distributed the rice meals for the Sudan refugees. The condition in southern Sudan is rough. Many are sick. Children and women suffer a lot to get clean drinking water. Girls walk bare foot in the dusty desert carrying heavy water jugs. Many children have lost their parents and face different challenges. Most of them don't go to school and can't get enough food provision. There was a high shortage of nutritious food by the time we received the rice meals. Therefore, it was life saving for many children. Many of the children came from a long distance to get food. One of those children lost his parents on the way. He had walked about 40 miles and was saved from death as soon as he ate the rice meals. Thank you!!!
Pastor Getahun.
