Motorcycles Ride to Help Feed the Needy
SOUTH BEND, Ind. -Motorcyclists have joined together to "Ride to the Bridge" in an effort to raise funds for the South Bend-based non-profit, Feeding The Nations (FTN). On September 28 and 29, the riders will ride over 1,000 miles from South Bend to the Mackinaw Island Bridge. Donations given to the effort will support FTN's work in the Ukraine."We are grateful to be blessed with a group of people who are so willing to give of their time to help us feed hungry children," said Steve Sumrall, president of FTN. "We appreciate this group's non-traditional approach in seeking support for our ministry. They are using their interests and passions to help us reach those in need and make a difference in the world."
This is the second year Jeff Nicolett has organized the ride to benefit FTN. "I felt a need to support the kind of activities FTN does," Nicolett explained. "I felt a responsibility and ownership to take food and hope to those countries, but I didn't have a way to bridge the gap between where I am in Indiana and where the food goes to other countries. I thought the best way to demonstrate that gap would be to do a symbolic ride to the biggest nearby bridge and ask for support."
The ride will take about 16 hours round trip. The group will travel up the Lake Michigan coast and journey home along a different scenic path. Those wishing to give to the cause can contact FTN at 574-968-1566. A one-time donation of just two-and-a-half cents per mile or $25 will receive a Feeding The Nations, "Ride to the Bridge" T-shirt.
This October FTN will partner with Heart to Heart International to deliver almost 60 tons of food and supplies valued at $325,000 to 17 organizations in the Ukraine. A team from South Bend will distribute the supplies to orphanages, hospitals and a children's center located in a women's prison, as well as minister to and care for those who have felt little love and hope throughout their lives. Ukraine is the second largest country in Europe and is about the size of Texas. Sadly it is home to over an estimated 100,000 orphans.
