BANGLADESH
In November 2007 Cyclone Sidr slammed into Bangladesh as a Category-4 tropical cyclone leaving over 3,447 dead and more than 20,000 homeless. Millions have been tragically affected asit swept through the country flattening houses, damaging
buildings and roads and destroying thousands of acres of crops.
December 2007 Update:
FTN is reaching out to families left in the wake of Cyclone Sidr with the help of the Swedish organisation Mission Aviation Fellowship (MAF). To help the local economy FTN purchased blankets and scarves in country rather than carrying items into the country.
Anders Korswing from MAF writes:
We managed to get enough blankets and scarfs from local villages. People were very happy to get work to help their own people. Village people worked day and night in order to get aid to the victims as soon as possible. It was very important to them that they could be involved.
Cold weather is on the way but we will get help to these people in time before January when it gets cold. Without blankets people will freeze to death. We are planning to continue to work in these villages (Phase 2) with evangelising campaigns. People want to hear more about God.
January 2008 Update:
2/3 of the blankets have already been delivered. In all FTN purchased 2,525 blankets, 1,525 shawls, and 1,025 big scarfs which provided help to about 5,000 people.
Pastor Salmon Swapon Bose from a town in Dhaka writes:
The raging storm was in the south west part of Bangladesh on the coastal are
a. We live in the north and we were not harmed but almost everyone on our church has relatives who lost everything. I try to help them and have started to raise funds to build new homes for these people. Please pray for us.
