Zambia

With poverty so immediate and suffering so intense Feeding The Nations is reaching out to help the most vulnerable, the orphan children of Zambia.  The actual number of orphan children in Zambia range from 1 million to 1.2 million. Over 800,000 Zambian children have lost one or both parents due to HIV/AIDS. As of 2008, the new life expectancy at birth is 37 years.
Feeding The Nations has seen the need first hand and has set a goal to provide $2 million worth of food and Bibles in 2008 for 15 Christian orphanages and schools. Feeding The Nations now has in place in the city of Lusaka, Zambia, administrators Dave and Connie Keating, missionaries, to carry out this project. We have put together information from several of the orphanages and schools that need our assistance.  As we strengthen our efforts to help fight hunger and to help train a generation through the Word of God we ask you to pray and then support FTN as we help change one life at a time

Kalingalinga Orphanage, Kamloops Road, Lusaka

450 children-many of these are orphans. They take in daily 400 children off the streets and 50 live on campus. Most of these children come from child-headed homes or widows with children. When there is food, they try to serve three meals a day.

At Christmas, they fed 1,000 children from the streets. Kalingalinga Orphanage provides children with a free education and gets sponsors to further educate many of them abroad. This is an excellent project. There is extreme need here. The facilities are in poor repair, have a daily problem with rats. And conditions are poor. Yet, what is accomplished here is amazing.

Kabwata Orphanage, Burma Road next to Zesco, Lusaka

72 children- Majority of children are double orphaned. Some children are brought in by police or abandoned.

Currently feed three meals per day. Ages of children range from 3-21. Also have a school in village with 250 children where some food goes. Young women with children come to this center on Tuesdays for food. Center is well equipped in every area. Owner's husband is a General and former Vice-President of Zambia.

Avila Orphanage, Muchinga Road, Matero Lusaka

300 children with 32 living on campus. They take-in daily 270 children off the streets. Most of these children come from child-headed homes or widow with children. Food is also given to the home caretakers to feed the children and adults in an HIV/AIDS infected home. One meal a day is served.

This organization has 236 churches through out Zambia and several more in neighbouring countries. They serve approximately 13,000 children throughout the nation. There are 26 churches in the Lusaka area alone, many with community schools. They are doing a great job training up the children to help others after they leave the program.

Tasha Orphanage, Lusaka

100 children

Tasha Orphanage is in one of the poorest compounds in Lusaka. This orphanage is very difficult to get to by vehicle. The conditions are very poor. Children do not stay at the orphanage because no facilities are available. Widows in the community or women without children have offered to take these children in. Some of the food that needs cooking is sent to these homes where meals are prepared and given to the children. This is an excellent project and needs all the help we can provide.

Jesus Cares Ministries, Omelo Mumba Road, Rhodespark, Lusaka

400 children- 60 children live at the school with the others coming from the community. Feeding one meal per day.

Jesus Cares Ministries is a large organization with many locations. They care for approximately 1,500 children throughout the Lusaka area. Some of the children come out of child labor and then go to school.  They have 800 members who volunteer. They appreciate food from FTN. Many of the children they help are out in the rural areas.

Lusungu Community School, Chawama, Lusaka

120 children- School teaches K-8th grade. Right now they are feeding children about four days per week because of food shortage.

School facing serious hardships.  The school is in a building with no electricity. They are also behind on rent. This is an excellent project to support with more frequent food distributions. This group has a very strong youth group of over 50 youths, filled with the Holy Spirit and evangelizing the area and doing other community projects. Our administrators in Zambia, Dave and Connie Keating, disciple this youth group. This is an excellent project with great needs. The parents that are involved with the school have seen the help from outsiders and now have formed a parent's committee to help the rent, etc.

CBTO-Kamanga, Kamanga, Lusaka

Approximately 400 children from the surrounding community come to this clinic and school daily. The school teaches K-4 currently but is adding classrooms. In many cases, the children are street kids or the one parent is away at work so the school takes them in and cares for them throughout the day. In other cases older children (ages 6-10 were caring for babies at home so now they are encouraged to bring the children to the school).

Ipusukilo Community School, Kitwe, Zambia

350 children fed five days a week

School is located in Copperbelt near Kitwe. This is an excellent Christian School. Connie and I have known them for over two years. Most children are not fed at home so the one meal a day at the school is required. They have a feeding program in place but supplements are critical.  We have seen a great difference in the health and education status of these children over the last couple of years. The building has been greatly remodelled and outdoor pit toilets are now in working condition.

Circle of Hope Clinic, Manda Hill Road

Approximately 840 adults and children come to this clinic and are given food. 25% are children taking ARV's for aids treatments. Without proper nutritional food to support the medication taken by the HIV/AIDS children they will not live.

Personal care items would be appreciated here.

Lazarus Projects, Chipwenupwenu Road

41 children living at the school. Feeding three times a day 190 street children come for the day.

Very needful project. Doesn't have access to other programs. Most of the boys are or were causing trouble in the streets, but now are being fed and taught the Word of God.

Luminary Foundation, Lusaka

200 children. School teaches K-7th. Right now they are feeding children about two to three days per week because of shortage of food.

This school is facing serious hardships with no electricity and water. Must carry water from community wells. Also behind on rent. Children are charged K2000 per month ($.50) but ¾ are not able to pay. This is an excellent project to support with more frequent food distributions.

Messianic Zambia Centre (Jerome Fleischer School), Lusaka

80-100 children

Shares what food they get with two other orphan groups. At this school, they try to feed two meals a day when food is available. Street children are brought in each day.
