Transforming the Uninhabitable: Feeding The Nations Nourishes Sio Sio

SOUTH BEND, Ind. - The South Bend-based non-profit, Feeding The Nations (FTN), supplied essential vitamins to the malnourished people of Sio Sio, a small island off the Cameroon mainland. Sio Sio is a place where rats run rampant and diseases claim the lives of many. No solid foundation exists, so houses are built on stilts above raw sewage and wooden planks act as makeshift sidewalks. A short time ago, the island did not have a school, proper nutrition or even land to walk on.

Pastor Georgy Nicodemus distributed the vitamins for FTN. She said, "The change in their health is tremendous. We want to thank Feeding The Nations for supporting the ministry by sending vitamins. It showed the people Christ's love is something tangible." She went on to report that the doctor who distributed them was so elated that he kissed a bottle of vitamins and fed one capsule to each child in the school to show them it was good for them.

Pastor Georgy first visited Sio Sio almost a year ago. Of her first visit, she said, "It was unreached. The people didn't even wear clothes. It was like going back in time." In that year, a lot had changed for the island. An outreach group built a foundation by bringing in land from the sea so the islanders could walk on solid ground. On that ground, they built a school, a church and a parsonage. Before the school opened, the children spent their days earning money by fishing. The school has only been in operation for a few months, but there has already been a remarkable change.

"It was phenomenal. The children can now speak and understand English and French without an interpreter. They can read and write in less than a year," she said. "This island is uninhabitable, but because it's their village, they continue to live there. Education is the key to their futures. The children will be able to go to the mainland to get jobs. We can train them and give them hope for the future."

Much more is in the planning stages for Cameroon. FTN will be shipping large quantities of food and vitamins for a November 2007 distribution to several areas through out the country.
