Local Agency to Rain-Down Support on Typhoon-Stricken Philippines
SOUTH BEND, Ind. – A local non-profit, Feeding The Nations (FTN), prepares to send over 120,000 pounds of food and relief to the Philippines after two typhoons in just a few weeks' time hit the island nation. The country has received record rainfalls of nearly 18 inches in just 24 hours. In fact, 80% of the nation's capital of Manila has been submerged after receiving a month's worth of rain in just 12 hours. Houses and entire neighborhoods have been swept away, and reports estimate that over 3 million Filipinos have been affected and 700 people dead. With so much rain the agricultural loses are expected to reach an estimated $400 million, greatly impacting the food prices.
"The news of what has happened deeply saddens us," said Steve Sumrall, FTN president. "We feel it is our responsibility and privilege to assist those hurting, hungry and homeless by providing them with as much food assistance as we possibly can. We pray that others will join in the effort because together we can provide more and bring hope to many."
In the aftermath, garbage lines the streets and mud coats everything in sight, creating unsanitary conditions. Those displaced have turned to relief shelters, but with such an extreme demand, shelters are far beyond capacity and resources. Many have had no choice, but to resort to building make-shift dwellings. Though the people of the Philippines want to rebuild and move forward, they must first meet their own immediate needs and fight daily battles with water-borne diseases and starvation.
