Local Agency Plans Immediate Response to Quake-Stricken Haiti
SOUTH BEND, Ind. – A local non-profit, Feeding The Nations (FTN), has teamed with aid organizations in Port-au-Prince, Haiti, and Santiago, Dominican Republic, to send immediate assistance to Haiti. A 7.0-magnitude earthquake hit the island nation Tuesday, January 12, nearly destroying its capital Port-au-Prince and affecting a third of its entire population. This latest disaster comes just months after four powerful storms ripped through Haiti, destroying vital crops and livelihoods.
"The terror and sadness the country has felt from such a devastating earthquake is unimaginable," said Steve Sumrall, FTN president. "We are grateful for the partner organizations and individuals who are making this immediate assistance possible. We pray our assistance will help ease the people of Haiti's struggles and help them move towards recovery and rebuilding."
Casa Grande Centro de Misiones International, a rapid response team located in Santiago, is working with FTN to buy supplies within the Dominican Republic and truck them into Haiti. The team consists of doctors, medical workers, emergency helpers and pastors. Located in Port-au-Prince, Fishers of Men International will also be receiving a portion of FTN's assistance to distribute immediately. In fact, during the first week of January the organization received 272,000 rice/vegetable meals from FTN, which will be distributed to those affected by the earthquake. In addition, FTN plans to send hundreds of thousands of more meals.
Along with nutritional support, FTN will be providing several portable water systems that can purify 600 gallons per unit of water per day taken from any available water source. The result is surgical pure water—an absolute necessity since many medical centers have been destroyed by the quake. The systems can run off any power source, including a car battery and can be easily transported.
For those who want to join in the effort and help FTN reach Haiti with vital food, clean water and supplies, please visit www.FeedingTheNations.org or call 574-968-1566 Monday –Friday, 8am-5pm or 1-866-572-4483 after hours for more information.
