Haiti Receives Abundance of Seed Corn from Local Agency
SOUTH BEND, Ind. – A local non-profit, Feeding The Nations (FTN), continues its efforts to aid Haiti as the nation rebuilds following the destructive earthquake that struck earlier this year. FTN has shipped 640-55-pound bags of yellow seed corn, amounting to 35,200 pounds of planting seed that has the potential to yield 8.4 million pounds of corn. This brings the total amount that FTN has sent to Haiti earthquake relief to 600,000 pounds (300 tons) of much needed food, tents, water purification systems and now seed corn.
"Knowing that Haiti is still in great need and will continue to be for some time, our efforts to reach them will continue," said Steve Sumrall, FTN president. "We have been blessed with great partnerships that have made it possible to reach Haiti with these much-needed resources. We pray this corn will find fertile soil, yield a bountiful crop and reach countless people."
The corn shipment should arrive in Port-au-Prince around April 16 and will be given to many needy farmers and church organizations that have planting fields. The corn was donated by Pioneer Seed Company. They estimate that each bag has an average of 88,250 grains of corn. The total shipment is enough to plant almost 2,000 acres.
