Feeding The Nations® Responds to Haitian Food Riots, Sends Provisions

SOUTH BEND, Ind. - In the midst of food riots in Haiti, Feeding The Nations (FTN), a South Bend-based non-profit, is taking action to supply the island nation with much-needed nourishment. The organization plans to send three forty-foot containers of about 125,000 pounds of food, including assorted canned vegetables, cereals, and rice casseroles meals fortified with vitamins and minerals.

"The people of Haiti are in desperate need of nourishment. Many people have nothing to eat and are forced to find anything available even if it doesn't provide adequate sustenance," said Steve Sumrall, president of FTN. "We pray that our food supplies will give them vital nutrition and can help ease at least a portion of their suffering."

Already the poorest country in this hemisphere, tragedy has compounded due to soaring fuel costs and hurricane damage causing Haiti's food prices to increase 50 percent from where they were a year ago. Eighty percent of the population lives on less than $2 a day, leaving many people with no money for food. Food riots have broken out and have taken innocent lives because the people are tired, hungry and hopeless. In their desperation, some have turned to eating mud cookies made of dirt, salt and vegetable shortening. They offer no nutritional sustenance and can often carry parasites.

Feeding The Nations is a non-profit 501(c) (3) International Christian humanitarian relief organization with supporting international offices. FTN is a division of Provident® whose ministries are headquartered in South Bend, Ind. The mission of FTN is to deliver food, medicine, new clothing and other necessities to families who lack these essentials due to famine, war, poverty or other natural disasters.
