FIJI

February 2009 Update:  Feeding The Nations has sent $12,700 USD to assist
the people of Fiji recently devastated  by widescale flooding.

The following is a report FTN received from Suliasi Kurulo, a local pastor:

Most of the bridges and streets are damaged while schools, villages and cities are under mud and buildings are crushed. Crops, including fruits and vegetables have been washed away. Families have lost everything. The local church has been actively involved in delivering food for the victims.

The main challenge is to get food to the countryside because all the fields are totally destroyed. Authorities and farmers are trying to make it possible to prepare the fields for use but it takes months before a crop can be reaped. As part of an emergency plan, the church is delivering food-packets and necessities. The situation is severe. Government, help organizations and churches can't make it by themselves. Help from outside is needed.
