Local Non-Profit Rains Down Hurricane Relief
SOUTH BEND, Ind. - Feeding The Nations (FTN), a South Bend-based non-profit organization, has sent food and supplies to the Dominican Republic to assist in the aftermath of Hurricane Noel. FTN assembled 65 tons of canned soup, green beans, potatoes, corn, mixed greens, and fortified rice and vegetable meals specially formulated for people who lack the recommended daily intake of vitamins, minerals and proteins.
"Our hearts go out to those affected by Hurricane Noel that struck just a few weeks ago," said Steve Sumrall, president of FTN. "But more than just extending our thoughts and prayers, we know these people need physical and spiritual nourishment during this time. We pray that the supplies we have sent will help ease their suffering and give them strength as they rebuild their homes and their lives."
The three 40-ft. containers of supplies have been sent to missionary Timothy Johnson of La Casa Grande de Centro de Misiones International in Santiago. Johnson reported that due to the hurricane, 75,000 people had to flee their homes and are living in churches, schools and government buildings. The island received as much rain in just two days as it typically gets in three years. The storm hit 100 towns and villages, damaged 18,675 homes and destroyed 2,000 homes. Over 100 people have died and several are still missing.
